42 Individuals Face Criminal Charges in Miami after Alleged Cockfighting Ring Bust – Rights and Options of Miami Criminal Defendants Explained

Cockfighting

The bust of an alleged cockfighting ring by Miami-Dade police ended in the arrest of a whopping 42 individuals, and some Miami residents and individuals are wondering just what a person can do if they are charged with a criminal offense in Miami. According to local news reports, on Friday, May 16, just ahead of the weekend, the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office responded to multiple reports of a fight. The reports indicated that the alleged altercation was taking place at 14287 SW 192nd Street in Miami. When police officers arrived on the scene, they reported that they “saw multiple people who were fighting and were also engaged in illegal gamefowl fighting.” The officers also reported that “suspects started to flee the scene on foot and in their vehicles.” One suspect “had rooster spurs, a natural bony structure on their legs, which are associated with cockfighting.” A total of 42 people were arrested at the scene, and they are now facing charges of fighting or baiting animals and resisting arrest without violence under Florida criminal laws. In addition, Miami-Dade police allegedly located $39,147 from the 42 suspects, as well as 72 roosters. The investigation into the case is ongoing, and it remains to be seen whether all 42 suspects will face criminal trials in court, and whether they will be convicted of the charges against them under Florida laws.
